If you know people who have experienced shingles, they will share it’s a miserable
Shingles is a viral infection of the nerve roots affecting many in the US. Many recover after a period of time, but for as many as 20 to 30 percent of people, the pain doesn’t go away. It lasts for months, years or even the rest of their lives leading to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), when the shingles virus damages the nerves of the skin. In some cases, the pain is mild. In others, even the slightest touch can be excruciating.
Some show benefit from early epidural steroid injection as part of aggressively treating acute shingles initially and to prevent PHN in addition to antiviral and pain medication management.
