Q: What is referred pain?

Pain can have a complex presentation, with multiple pain generators.

Referred pain, also called reflective pain, is pain perceived at a location

other than the site of the painful stimulus. Not all

pain is due to a disc herniation or bulge. Sometimes

the problem is with one of the many joints within

the back, neck or pelvis. Sacroiliac joint pain, zyg-

apophyseal (or facet) pain are relatively common

especially with aging. Treatment may include not

only injections or medications, but also physical

therapy, smoking cessation, diet and lifestyle modi-

fication and medical management.

Myofascial pain can be complicated and impact people of all ages.

Treatment for myofascial pain is also another service we provide, dealing

with symptoms of not only muscle pain, but it also may be the trigger for

some headaches. Treatment can include trigger point injections, medica-

tion recommendations, physical therapy and guidance on additional treat-

ment modalities.

Q:  What services do you offer with a referral?

A: Pain is complicated and in many cases manifests as issues with the

body, mind and spirit. During your initial evaluation, a thorough holistic

assessment of the components will be performed.

Education is given based on the findings of this assessment, and a comprehensive treatment plan is made with your input as well. Not every patient receives interventional treatments, and no treatment is given without your input. If additional imaging or referral to other providers is indicated they will be made. You will be expected to play an active role in your treatment which may include physical therapy, chiropractic, nutrition/dietician services, alternative/

complementary therapy and medication management recommendations.

The primary focus of treatment is to improve your functionality and pain

using multimodal treatment.
